Openness of LTO ultrium provides users the benefit of having multiple product & media sources. The open nature of LTO ultrium allows compatibility among the LTO data tapes developed by different media manufactures. Four generation of LTO backup tape have been launched into the market whose native recording capacity ranges from 100 to 800GB. 100GB is the capacity of LTO1 tape while the LTO-4 tape holds up to 800GB.
Ultrium format is LTO technology’s implementation that has been engineered keeping in view the demands and needs of automated environments, departmental servers, SMBs, standalone environments and data intensive applications. Single reel is used in all the LTO data tapes whose track density has been enhanced so that they can accommodate more data amounts. LTO tape technology is developed to satisfy the enterprises’ backup storage demands through single server. The roadmap of LTO media extends the recording capacity to 3.2 TB. Innovative features have been introduced to the LTO tape technology that helps to perform efficient storage and data retrieval tasks at a fast rate and lowest cost. LTO ultrium tape storage technology has established new standards for high volume archive and backup.
A single LTO-1 tape cartridge with 2:1 compression will store 200 GB and the LTO4 tape can record 1.6 TB. The cartridge size of LTO1 data tape is smaller as compared to the existing single reel data cartridges. Fast native speed is a powerful feature of the LTO-4 ultrium tape which reaches 120 MB/s. The backup operations and functionality of LTO-4 data tape are enhanced by the LTO-CM (cartridge memory). The LTO-CM provides the tape drive user defined information and file log, which assist the tape drive to raise the level of its performance and efficiency. An external reader is also available which helps the users to gain immediate access to the data stored in the LTO cartridge memory without inserting the backup cartridge into the drive.
LTO-1 tape technology provides more flexibility to the I.T managers. LTO tape technology allows more freedom to the data administrators in terms of controllers, reliability, interfaces, form factors and performance characteristics. The ultrium data tapes can be interchanges among the different tape drives. Data compression and error correction technique of highly economical LTO-4 media tape format is highly efficient. Multiple sources of tape drives & media protect the users and OEMs’ investment and also have helped to reduce the production bottlenecks. Servo format of the LTO ultrium technology performs efficiently throughout the product’s useful life. This powerful attribute has helped the manufacturers of LTO tape storage products to leverage their investments. The compliance testing by independent organizations shortens the qualification cycles. It is also very useful in simplifying the product planning of the OEMs for future. The size of the LTO data cartridges has been reduced than the other traditional tape cartridges.
