efore we discuss how character education can be incorporated into classrooms, we need to know what Character education is. Character education is a part of special education which is conducted in schools where it focuses on the role of teachers to develop moral and ethical values in their students. Character education programs have gained much popularity across many schools in US, maybe due to an increase in school violence. To instill character development in schools, teachers should be properly trained. They should be adequately trained to use different tools like vignettes, lesson plans and properly weaved curriculum that will help them to identify and define important character traits in students. Teachers are trained to explore the different possibilities that will help them to develop moral and ethical values in their students. Apart from lesson plans, teachers should also develop and implement various classroom activities that will help them to promote character development.
Character education should not be limited to a school environment alone. It has proved to be useful in the broader community as well. In order to make Character education stronger and effective it is desirable for the entire community to get involved. Teachers, administrators, counselors, parents and the rest of the entire community should play an active role in character building.
Teachers play a major role in fostering the character of their students’ thereby creating a moral and ethical community in the classroom as well as outside the classroom. It is also important for the teachers to explore the various historical perspectives on character education.
While teaching topics on controversial issues within classrooms, conflict resolution should be the key. Teachers should establish certain rules and guidelines that will help them to keep discussions on such issues, as diplomatic as possible and also should establish moral ways to discipline their students who may turn out to be aggressive. The truth is, conflicts should arise among students in the classroom to develop character by using conflict resolution techniques.
Parents and the community, both should play vital roles in character building as whatever disciplines or rules that are taught and trained in classrooms are going to be practiced and carried out in different areas of every student’s life, outside classrooms. Hence, parents, teachers and community should equally participate with the same mindset or else students may become confused and may not respond in a positive way to character education training conducted in schools.
In a nut shell, any character education program should teach and train students how to interact and care for each other. Character education and Character development helps teachers to improve the quality of communication and also help them to understand how to respond when in certain situations where a student fails to answer a question and to control and maintain moral authority. Character development is essential as it helps teachers, students, administrators, parents and even the rest of the broader community learns how to deal with several issues effectively and efficiently. However, it all rests on the shoulders of these schools to develop and implement these programs in a correct way as it may elicit a very positive outcome for the students as well as for the entire community.
Academic instruction isn’t the only responsibility teachers have in today’s classrooms. More and more, teachers are being called on to teach students about values ... things like making good decisions, the showing of respect, taking responsibility, choosing friends, and having a positive attitude. It’s a responsibility that could be overwhelming, considering the limited hours available in a school day, the number of kids in the classroom, and the diversity of backgrounds and personalities each child represents.
